PUNJAB CHAPTER

CONSTITUTION OF SOCIETY

Soil Conservation Society of India (SCSI) Regd. was established in year 1952 at Hazaribagh. On Dec 21, 1952 society came into existence with 31 founder members (Dr. M L Dewan and Dr. J S Bali being among them in lead). Now it has around 4000 members. The head quarters of society is at New Delhi This society was established with an objective to bring awareness and knowledge about land resources of the country, also about the conservation and care of soil and water by its chapters. The society as enjoined upon by its constitution also promoted setting up of chapters. So far sixteen regional chapters have been established in different states. The directory of all members with their addresses of SCSI is published from time to time so as to increase coordination among members and to encourage exchange of ideas. Punjab chapter is one of the best and active feathers of SCSI. It was established in year 1991 and it has 350 members on its rolls till now and is expanding further.

OBJECTIVES OF SOCIETY

  • Survey of relevant natural resources of country viz. climate, land, water, plants, animals and human resources in a systematic manner, in units appropriate watersheds using along with other conventional methods, the modern techniques of  remote sensing computerized interpretation , storage and retrieval of information.

  • The spread of knowledge of sound soil and water conservation and management practices by all suitable means so as to prevent and control land degradation, manage rainwater and runoff etc.

  • An integrated approach by people and govt. on these problems with consequential coordination in direction and execution of all matters relating to soil and water conservation and management

  • Appreciation of wide benefits of sound soil and water conservation practices in the effective control of  soil erosion, sediment discharge and floods and increase of life of  storage reservoirs in all irrigation and water resource development projects.

PROGRAMME

To achieve above mentioned objectives the society

  • Publishes journals, bulletins, news letters, and special issues for awareness.

  • Compile and publish books, pamphlets etc.

  • Convene symposia and conferences, meetings, seminars, organise popular lectures, excursions and exhibitions on conservation matters.

  • Organise and help to form regional chapters of society in different parts of India so as to spread information

  • To take consultancy and training projects in the relevant fields, and collaborate where necessary with other agencies whether govt. or non-govt.

  • Examine the state of land resources from time to time vis-à-vis the growing needs of people.

  • General meetings of members of society help in exchanging views and information among members as both retd. And fresh workers are on rolls it helps freshers in gaining vital knowledge from their experienced counterparts.

  • The society organizes various on field camps and training exercises so as to acquaint farmers with latest techniques

 

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • The society recommended the "establishment of soil conservation demonstration centers by catchments or sub-catchments." The present Central Soil and water conservation Research and Training Institute has its pre-natal seed idea from society deliberations.

  • The initiation of national soil conservation programmes was in no small way the outcome of wide awareness of resource conservation need spread by society.

  • The society has published 45 volumes of Journal of Soil and Water Conservation in India, thus continuously training the workers for higher levels of programme planning and implementation efficiently.

  • It has so far held 14 National Conferences besides the first symposium of Dec 1951, thus continuing to spread land, water and bioresource conservation. Conference deliberations improve the policies and programmes of soil and Water Conservation and generate many new and more useful trends in Land and Water Resource Management.

  • The society's workers set up the first multi-sectoral watershed management project in the Damodar Valley. The society can take due pride in the countrywide spread of watershed approach.

Anyone who is concerned about conserving natural resources and is willing to promote the aims and objectives of the society within the framework of its constitution can join this society. The following types of membership are available:
