Solar Powered Community Lift-Micro Irrigation Project

Objectives

  • To develop a comprehensive land-use and water and energy management model that demonstrates efficient on-farm water use and fully meets the aspirations of people to improve agriculture productivity and thereby their income.
  • To develop a working model for efficient irrigation using surface water in view of the depleting ground water table in the State and thereby develop a broad understanding of water rights and regulations and policies for conjunctive use of water.
  • To improve scientific, engineering and applied technological expertise of field staff so as to encourage science-based decision making.
  • To ensure that the community recognizes the essential role of irrigation water and importance of its responsible use in its well-being and thereby develop local institutions to promote sustainable irrigation water management.

Benefits/Outcomes of project:

The project has given a much needed opportunity to the farming community of the project area as the villagers have not only ventured into conventional agriculture but even some of them, given the support of Department have started growing cash crops such as vegetables and horticulture crops. The Department in order to provide assured marketing of such crops had made elaborate arrangements with local processing units. The training centre which has been set up as part of project besides providing trainings on agricultural and technological aspects are also providing livelihood based trainings to landless and women community. Because of proximity of urban areas, allied activities such as dairy farming is mushrooming as fodder cultivation earlier dependent on rainfall, is now being grown all over the year. This besides giving an additional source of income has also provided a fiscal cushion for the local populace. Encouraged by assured irrigation, the farmers are also opting for mechanized tools such as tillers etc for agriculture compared to purely traditional agriculture followed earlier.

Community Underground Pipeline Project at Village Bhangewala

Objectives

  • Conjunctive use of irrigation water (good quality + saline underground water).
  • Increasing Irrigation Water Efficiency
  • Saving of land going waste on account of construction of open water channels

Benefits/Outcomes of project:

After laying the underground pipes, there is no seepage of water and a lot of water now saved. The farmers now irrigate their fields properly. The project include saving in the productive farm land by removing field channels and also saving in time, energy and labour cost. Field crop production and water availability has been increased. The cost of the land has also been increased after laying pipeline. Today farmers have a joy on their face.

Regular and assured supply of water throughout the year also in the peak summer season in the month of june and july had adequate water to meets the needs of local community for irrigation at least three to four live saving irrigations. Nineteen families belonging to different communities are enjoying the benefit of this water Harvesting structure. Animal needs of drinking water also being met.

Common Underground Pipeline Project for Utilization of water for Irrigation from Village Water Body at village Ajnoud (Ludhiana)

Objectives

  • Judicious and efficient use of Available water with underground pipeline system for conveyance.
  • UGPL helps save about 30% water when compared to open channels.
  • With zero withdrawal of ground water, this project will help limiting the declining water table in this declared Over-Exploited area with respect to ground water Development.
  • By laying of UGPL 3% of land shall be saved which when put under agriculture will increase per unit production.
  • Decreased labour input.
  • As the pond water is rich in organic matter and other nutrients, its usage will reduce the fertilizer consumption as well as continuous use of this water will improve the soil conditions for a better plant growth.
  • Project will help reducing the power consumption for irrigating the fields, and thus will reduce the cost of production.
  • Use of pond water will improve the sanitary conditions of the village, by preventing the outbreak of various water/vector borne diseases like cholera, malaria, dengue, chickenguniya etc., which otherwise during rainy season was overflowing into the adjoining residential/agricultural fields.
  • Reuse of pond water for irrigation will help small/marginal farmers by way of cutting down the cost of installation and operation of tubewells.

Benefits/Outcomes of project:

By utilising the pond water for irrigation by laying Under Ground Pipe line, efficient use of Available water was accomplished.UGPL is helping saving of about 30% water as compared to open channels annually. As there is zero withdrawal of ground water in the command area, this project is surely limiting the declining water table in this declared Over-Exploited area with respect to ground water Development. About 3% of additional land is put under agriculture which will increase per unit production. As now no open channel for irrigation, therefore, no regular cleaning required and hence there is decreased labour input. Continuous use of organic matter rich pond water for agriculture will reduce the fertilizer consumption as well as will improve the soil conditions for a better plant growth. Now there is decreased power consumption for irrigation, thereby reducing cost of production and hence making agriculture more profitable.As now the pond water is utilised fully for agriculture, there is no overflowing water into the residential area, which is greatly helping in checking the spread of water/vector borne diseases in the village and the project has also improved the village aesthetically. Farm Water Conservation Through Underground Pipeline Irrigation System at village Jaid (Bathinda)

Objectives of Project:

The main objective of this project was to highlight the importance of underground pipeline system and to demonstrate its importance to the farmers of the village and nearby areas. The purpose of this project was also to create mass awareness about the importance of UGPS and also its role in socio economic upliftment of the beneficiaries. Main objective was also to give assured irrigation facilities to the farmers and also to save precious water and conserve the ground water.

Benefits/Outcomes of project:

After completion of the project and taking into consideration talks we had with villages/beneficiaries following benefits/outcomes have been identified.

  • UGPS according to our analysis has lead to about 22-25% saving of irrigation water as compared to irrigation carried out by open channels earlier.
  • Due to availability of water to all the command area, usage of electricity pump sets has been reduced thereby helping in increase of groundwater table of the area.
  • Now farmers are getting more water in their fields as compared to earlier system.
  • Productivity of the crops has been increased upto 15-17% as compared to earlier system.
  • Area of the land which was earlier blocked due to lined channels in the fields is now free for cultivation and farmers are using this land for crop production.
  • After implementation of the UGPS farmers income has also increased due to increase in productivity and increase in area of cultivation.

Increasing Irrigation Water Efficiency Through Underground Pipeline Conveyance System at Village Sehjadi (Ferozepur)

  • To overcome the problem of ground water depletion, water scarcity.

Benefits/Outcomes of projects:

This intervention had a great impact in term of area under irrigation. Earlier water is not available for irrigation for this area, now got sufficient amount of water due to laying of underground pipe line. Pipeline was installed beneath the earth surface so there is also land saving. Water becomes available so yield of this area is increased. Thus social economical life of this area is also enhanced.

Under Ground Pipe Line (UGPL) system Bhootgarh Canal at Village Bhootgarh (Patiala)

Objectives of Project:

Under Ground Pipe Line (UGPL) system, which uses irrigation pipes placed underground to fetch the water from the source to the field, provides the most appropriate solution to tackle the above mentioned problems. Depending on the mean sea level of the source and the fields, UGPL system can bring water by gravity or by lifting and by carrying irrigation water from a source well to the field with pressure. UGPL system minimizes water losses during conveyance from water bodies to farmers’ field. Further, maintenance of irrigation channels is a bigger problem particularly during paddy growing season when weed intensity is at peak. By creating underground conveyance system, thus, additional land is also effectively brought under cultivation by saving on the lands lost in making irrigation channels.

Benefits/Outcomes of project:

  • There is significant increase in crop productivity due to use of UGPL system in the fields. The increase is around 20% for paddy & 25% for wheat.
  • There is saving of water as well. The average saving of water in irrigating one acre of paddy field is around 20% whereas the same is around 25% for the wheat crop.
  • The UGPL system has helped in reduction of labour cost and drudgery for the farmers.
  • A few other benefits reported were, land saving by about 2-3%, elimination of water logging near channel to the extent of 0.5%, elimination of additional wells in the area, safety in operations etc.
  • Diversification in Crops: farmers are diversifying to other crops like Paddy, Vegetables etc. after getting assured irrigation.
  • The water will released for irrigation through 1 riser at a time.
  • Rotational water supply/warabandi is adopted for operation of the system.

Laying of Underground Pipeline in Agricultural Fields for Irrigation at Village Langomahal (Amritsar)

Objectives of Project:

The aim of this success stories is to reflect the outstanding features of UGPL underground pipe line system. and to highlight the implementation and effectiveness of this irrigation system achieved through the initiatives and endeavours made by soil conservation department ,be it the extension, awareness or providing financial assistance/subsidy through RKVY scheme. This story also highlights the successful adoption of this scheme by farmers, thus resulting in socio-economic upliftment of farmer and also shows the sincere efforts of conserving two most important of resources of nature (soil and water) by the department.

Benefits/Outcomes of project:

  • Problems arising due to water logging and soil erosion, unnecessary growth of weeds in irrigation channels are taken care of.
  • Decrease in pest problems and diseases which earlier occurred due to water logging.
  • Accessibility and delivery of water to upland areas of filed.
  • Elimination/ minimization of tail end water losses as the system operates under pressure, and there are no percolation and seepage losses.
  • Decrease in cost of labour, electricity, water application, thus minimizing the input costs involved in cultivation of crops especially paddy.
  • The channels which were earlier used for irrigation are brought under cultivation, thus increasing thus net sown area which obviously results in increased yield.
  • The inter connectivity of multiple tube wells/ water sources ensure uninterrupted supply of irrigation in event of fault/breakdown of one of the tube well.

Increasing Irrigation Water efficiency through Box Outlet Underground Pipeline Conveyance System at Village Hardialeana (Faridkot)

Objectives of Project:

  • Efficient use of water through pipeline for gross production in agriculture and to increase the fertility of soil as well as productivity.

Benefits/Outcomes of project:

Very Efficient use of tubewell water through pipeline as a result 30-35 % crop production increased and water Losses decreased as whole command area is now irrigated with tubewell water. The cultivated area also increased and hence the yield increased as the area under open channel was used for taking production and whole area got equal water. There was reduction in maintenance cost and labour cost. The economic condition of the farmers increased as there was increased in production, reduction in labour and maintenance cost.
